- About The Project
Balmain Hospital Main Building is a heritage-listed hospital building at Booth Street, Balmain, It was designed by E. J. Bowen and built in 1880. It is also known as the Administration Building of the hospital campus in Balmain. Heritage 21 was commissioned by the Sydney Local Area Health Service in 2018 to prepare conservation documents for the general repair work required to the original facades of the building including verandas, and roof repairs.
- What was done
A schedule of conservation works was prepared by Heritage 21 which mainly comprised specifications for the paintwork, repointing of the brickwork, veranda tiling, fenestration, removal of lead paint, brickwork, plaster detailing, signage, balustrades, timber fretwork, sandstone and several other elements. In all cases, detailed conservation specifications were prepared for the immediate commencement of the works.

Why was the work undertaken?
The original 1880’s façade; although repaired in the past, has not had much conservation work effected to it. However, several urgent repairs such as the re-joining of the brickwork and the removal of incorrectly specified paint work in the past, required the client to urgently seek advice on appropriate conservation works. Heritage 21 stepped up the plate by producing the necessary documentation.
Who was the work completed for?
The property is owned by the NSW Department of Health.
Outcome
As of February 2021, the works have not yet been commissioned due to funding issues. However, the documents have been repaired for commencement at any future date.
